Hallstatt's history is rich and dates back to prehistoric times, making it one of the oldest settlements in Europe. The discovery of vast salt deposits drove the growth of the salt mining industry, which shaped the local economy and culture for over 7,000 years.

Human activity in the Salzkammergut began in prehistoric times, with the salt deposits being exploited as early as the 2nd millennium BC.

You can learn more at the Hallstatt museum that has unrivalled collection of discoveries from the local salt mines and from the cemeteries of Iron Age near to the mines.

Right next to Marktplatz you will find the imposing Evangelical church of Hallstatt, built as a house of prayer in 1785.

The Assumption church is the other church in Hallstatt, being the Catholic church located up on the hill and it has a small cemetery.

In St. Michael’s Chapel, you can see a collection of skulls. Lack of space in the cemetery, led to taking out skulls from the cemetery after 10-15 years of funeral.

The skulls were cleaned and painted before going on display.
