About St. Lucia

Saint Lucia is a volcanic island state with an area of 617 sq km, inhabited by about 180,000 people. The nation's capital and largest city is Castries.

Saint Lucia was discovered by the Spanish in 1500-1502. Since they did not discover any riches or promising natural resources, the Spanish ignored the island and it became a possession of the French.

In the 17th century, conflicts with the English began over the possession of the island.

The rule of the island changed 14 times between the French and the English, who finally established themselves as rulers in 1814.

Since 1979, Saint Lucia has been an independent state, part of the British Commonwealth, governed by a Governor, who represents the English Crown.

Let's take a closer look at some must-visit places on this beautiful island.

The Pitons

The Pitons are perhaps the most recognizable landmarks of Saint Lucia. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these two striking volcanic peaks, Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rise dramatically from the Caribbean Sea, creating a breathtaking view.

Piton means mountain peak in French; Petit Piton means small mountain peak and Gros Piton means large mountain peak. Petit Piton is 743 m (2,438 ft) high and Gros Piton is 798.25 m (2,618.9 ft) high.

For the adventurous, hiking Gros Piton is a rewarding challenge and a sure way to get your adrenaline going.. The hike, which covers about 4 kilometers, takes an average of 2-3 hours to complete. As you climb, be prepared to encounter diverse wildlife and lush vegetation, including the endemic Saint Lucia parrot.

If hiking isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy the stunning sight of the Pitons from local beaches and resorts or while sailing around them.

Sulphur Springs

The Sulphur Springs are geothermal area near Soufriere, the most popular tourist destination in Saint Lucia.

Soufriere Volcano is the only drive-in volcano in the world. It is considered to be a dormant volcano, last erupted over 200 years ago.

The water located at the center of the springs boils at roughly 212 Fahrenheit (100 Celsius) creating large plumes of steam.

Guided tours are available, allowing visitors to learn about the geological significance of the site.

One of the best features of the volcano is the ability to dive into the mud baths.

The mud baths have healing properties and help to heal sun burns, eczema, arthritis, sore joints, and more.

Dip into the mud, and your skin will feel rejuvenated. Just make sure to follow safety guidelines while enjoying this unique experience.

Sugar Beach

Sugar Beach, probably the prettiest beach on the island is spectacularly situated between the two Pitons, ensuring phenomenal views both from the sand and in the water.

Like most in the area, Sugar Beach was originally a gray-sand beach – the soft white sand is imported from abroad.

Sugar Beach, also known as Jalousie Plantation Beach, offers a blend of a private resort and a stunning public beach. It is a part of the luxurious Viceroy Resort. Nevertheless, the beach is also open to the public since all beaches in St. Lucia are public.

The beach is a great place for snorkeling where you can enjoy seeing beautiful colorful fish in the clear shallow waters.

The bay serves as an excellent launch point for boat tours.

You can rent a kayak to explore the bay's tranquil waters or enjoy snorkeling to uncover the vibrant marine life beneath the surface.

This area is also home to numerous excellent restaurants offering fresh local seafood, allowing you to savor traditional dishes with a stunning view.

Whether it's a leisurely walk along the waterfront or a sunset dinner, Marigot Bay is a magical destination.

Anse Chastanet Beach

Anse Chastanet is a top destination for beachgoers. Renowned for its clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs, this beach is ideal for both relaxation and underwater adventures. It ranks high among the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.

The beach provides opportunities for snorkeling and diving among colorful fish and coral formations. If unwinding on the golden sands is more your style, several restaurants line the beach offering local cuisine. Sip on a refreshing rum punch while taking in the breathtaking scenery.

Here you will find Anse Chastanet Resort, located amidst lush tropical forests between Anse Chastanet and Anse Mamin beaches, offering stunning views of the Gros and Petit Piton mountains and the Caribbean Sea.
