Nestled in the sparkling Aegean Sea, the Saronic Islands of Greece are a collection of enchanting gems waiting to be discovered. As we embark on this exciting journey, prepare to be captivated by the beauty, history, and allure that these islands have to offer.
Situated within easy reach of Athens, the Saronic Islands are a popular destination for both travelers seeking a relaxing getaway and history enthusiasts eager to explore ancient ruins. The islands are steeped in mythology and rich in cultural heritage, offering a unique blend of traditional charm and modern sophistication.
I visited the Saronic Islands a few years ago taking a day trip cruise from Athens.
The cruise ship stops at 3 islands -Hydra, Poros and Aegina with free time to explore each of them. There is a delicious buffet lunch and Greek music on board to enjoy.
The whole cruise lasts 12 hours visiting the three islands.
From the open deck you have a great vantage point for seeing the beautiful Greek coast and the Aegean Sea and also bask in the sun.
Our first stop is Hydra, a picturesque island where time seems to stand still. With its car-free streets and charming harbor lined with cafes and boutiques, Hydra exudes a sense of timeless elegance. The town is colored in the typical colors of Greece - blue and white.
Hydra is separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow strip of water. It is a popular day trip from Athens due to its close distance, about 2,5 hours ferry ride.
As you enter the port of Hydra be ready to marvel at the stunning views and dramatic landscapes of the island.
Hydra amazes visitors at first sight with the elegant stone mansions constructed on the slopes of a hill around the port with many boats and yachts.
The interesting thing about Hydra island is that cars and other motor vehicles are entirely prohibited, so all transport is done on foot, by boat or riding the donkey. In fact, the donkey ride is very popular among tourists.
Once you step on the island you can explore the narrow, stone-paved streets on foot or by a saddled donkey. You can also enjoy a relaxing walk along the seaside promenade and stop at some of the small shops, buy souvenirs or have a drink or meal at one of the many cafes and restaurants.
If you wish to stay longer time on the island you can visit one of the beaches Agios Nikolaos, Bitsi,Vlichos and Kaminia. The beaches are actually small coves with crystal water and green surroundings.
If you like trekking and hiking there are paths that start from the town and lead to old mansions and monasteries in the countryside.
Hydra has frequent ferry connections with Athens, Poros, Spetses and Ermioni in Peloponnese.
After seeing this amazing island you can return on the ship and continue to your next destination - Poros island.
Poros is also a popular weekend destination offering beautiful natural surroundings, a variety of cafes and restaurants and several beautiful beaches ideal for your perfect holiday.
Poros is situated in the southwest of the Saronic Gulf, opposite the Peloponnese and is comprised of two islands - Sphairia, the southern part, which is of volcanic origin, where today's city is located and Kalavria, the northern and largest part. A bridge connects the two islands over a narrow strait.
Poros is easily accessible. The island is just an hour ferry ride from Athens. There are also ferry connections from Piraeus and from Peloponnese (Galatas).
The town, constructed on the slopes of a hill, has picturesque architecture and is the center of most activities on the island. A waterfront promenade is a wonderful place for a relaxing walk and you may enjoy a delicious meal at some of the many restaurants.
The major attraction is the Clock Tower standing high on the hill offering amazing views of the whole town and sea. Totally worth climbing as it is the perfect spot for taking pictures and enjoying panoramic views.
If you are visiting the island for a longer time a great option is to head to some of the beautiful and well-organized beaches of the island - Askeli, Love Bay and Neorio.
Askeli is very popular among tourists and has a long sandy beach with clean water and many facilities, hotels and restaurants.
The most picturesque place of Poros is the Love Bay. This is actually a small cove with blue-green waters and surrounded by lush greenery. It is accessed by bus from the town.
You may find also interesting to visit the historical Monastery of Zoodohos Pighi located on a hill above Askeli beach. It is surrounded by pine trees and has historical importance for the island.
The last stop in our cruise to the Saronic islands is Aegina, located only an hour ferry ride from Athens.
The island can also be easily reached within an hour from Piraeus with the regular ferry services.
Aegina is a place of rich history. During ancient times the island was a great naval power and the capital of Greece for a short time in 1828.
Aegina is a beautiful place with lovely narrow streets and remarkable port promenade where you can take a relaxing stroll and stop at some of the many cafes, restaurants and shops lined along the promenade.
The most important sight in Aegina is the Ancient Temple of Athena Aphaia, constructed in the 6th century BC. The temple is located on a hill with amazing views over the island, surrounded by pine trees.
Another sight worth visiting is the Monastery of Agios Nektarios, the protector of Aegina island.
In Aegina, you can find plenty of beautiful beaches.
Agia Marina is the most popular beach resort, while more secluded are the beaches of Marathon, Souvala, Vagia and Perdika.
In summer, there is also a boat from Perdika to the remote islet of Moni - a peaceful and untouched place with clear blue waters and amazing surroundings.
